Who are AMT Design
Our Background and Capabilities
AMT Design Solutions Ltd was initially established to make available the consultancy services of Andrew Thomas.
Andrew qualified as an architect in 1982 and is currently registered as an architect with the Architects Registration Board. He started his professional life with the Central Electricity Generating Board, working on a number of nuclear power stations as well as other office and education type projects. After gaining experience with several local architectural practices, he was one of the founders of the Architect Shop Ltd.
Developing and interest in management, he qualified as a lead assessor of ISO 9000 quality systems, and through Construction Quality Assurance based in Newark, developed experience of auditing and what a good systems looks like! Offering consultancy to design companies, Andrew acted as consultant to many architects, helping them develop their initial system, gain accreditation and make any required changes due to legislation updates. He helped many practices and companies but Fielden Clegg Bradley and Anthony Hunt Associates stand out.
Being surprised by actually how similar the quality systems were, Andrew developed an “off the shelf” quality system for architects, this was published by Butterworth Heinemann.
The second book, design-build is published by Wiley Academy. This book actually grew out of an internal project for Kier, where Andrew was asked to write a guide to good design in subcontracts, to help the quantity surveying department develop and ask the right questions.
Andrew is currently working on his third book, this is a guide to producing good construction information, we hope to be able to name the publisher shortly.
Why Choose AMT?
An architect that works with a contractor, actually building the project.
Supported by project management and general management systems training, the “balanced” approach provides better solutions.
Andrew’s inquisitive mind will help optimise and facilitate your project.
Over 30 years experience in the construction sector, initially as an architect in the private sector and then as a design manager for several Tier 1 contractors.
Using knowledge gained to write three books on related subjects.
Always trying to optimise the design and take the risk out of construction.
Prefabrication and offsite manufacture - modernise construction.
Andrew uses all of his consultancy experience to help manage the design teams on contractor led projects. Projects have varied in size, from Government Central Head Quarters in Cheltenham, through retail and business parks down to a single classroom for a school.
He is able to use his knowledge to minimise risk by working closely with the design team to develop the contract compliant construction information to the quality required and in line with the programme for release programme. Contractors helped in this way include Kier, Carillion, Laing O’Rourke, Midas, ISG and Wates to name a few.
More of AMT Design Solutions Ltd work involves providing support for clients, getting involved early in the pre-construction phase, advising on whether the proposals actually satisfy the brief, whether they are cost effective, could they be value engineered to reduce cost or construction time? And then during construction, advising on progress, potential problems and solutions as well as reports on the quality of construction achieved.
Following the recent Government push to use BIM on projects, Andrew was recently engaged by Bristol City Council to carry out an audit on the design for the potential arena, being government funded they wanted to know if the design information produced by the Populous design team could be classed BIM level 2 (audited against PAS 1192)
Although Andrew mainly works on his own, he is able to bring-in other professionals of complimenting disciplines, to enable a full team approach to be offered.
